    1. Only allowed 100,000 soldiers
      1. Caused Germany to create a small, but extremely well-trained army
      2. No submarines

            1. Limited army reserves
              1. People joining the army had to stay in for 12 years - officers had to stay in for 25 years
                1. Limited amounts of people with military training

                  2. The west of the Rhineland and 50 kms east of the River Rhine was made into a demilitarised zone (DMZ)
                    1. The Allies had to keep an army of occupation on the west bank of the Rhine for 15 years
                    2. Germany's Land
                      1. Land given away:
                        1. Alsace-Lorraine returned to France
                          1. Eupen and Malmedy given to Belgium
                            1. Northern Schleswig given to Denmark
                              1. Hultschin given to Czechoslovakia
                                1. West Prussia, Posen and Upper Silesia given to Poland
                                2. The Saar, Danzig and Memel put under the control of the League of Nations
                                  1. The people of these regions would be allowed to vote to stay in Germany or not in a future referendum.
                                  2. The League of Nations took control of Germany's overseas colonies.
                                    1. Germany had to return to Russia land taken in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
                                      1. Some of this land was made into new states : Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. An enlarged Poland also received some of the land.
                                    2. Finances
                                      1. Coal from the Saar and Upper Silesia was a vital economic loss.
                                        1. Germany had to pay 6.6bn in reparations
                                          1. Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria, to keep economic potential to a minimum
                                          2. Clause 231
                                            1. The 'war guilt' clause
                                              1. Germany had to admit full responsibility for starting the war.
                                                1. Because of this clause, Germany was made to pay the reparations
                                                  1. The amount was far too much for Germany to pay
                                                    1. Many Germans felt they were being punished for the mistakes of the government
                                                    2. The treaty kept Germany weak, yet strong enough to prevent the spread of communism, which Lloyd George considered more of a priority
