How Ireland was governed
  1. 1154: King Henry II became Lord of Ireland in a letter from the Pope (a Papal Bull)
    1. King appointed a Lord Deputy from the Old English lords to rule in his name
      1. Over time, many of the Old English inter-married with Irish families and adopted Gaelic customs
        1. Eventually English power over much of Ireland declined
          1. Certain members of the big families even gained control of the office of Lord Deputy, so the King's authority declined further
            1. Adoption of Irish laws and customs left less and less territory to be controlled
