  1. KA 1 - Cell Structure
    1. Cell structure and function
      1. Cell Membrane - Outer covering of the cells that regulates what can enter or leave
        1. Cytoplasm - The watery substance found inside cells where all the chemical reactions take place
          1. Nucleus - Controls all the activities of the cell and contains genetic material
            1. Chloroplast - Structure found in green plant cells that contains chlorophyll and where photosyntheis take places
              1. Vacuole - a membrane-bound sac found in plant cells containing a watery solution giving support
                1. Cell wall - Outer covering of plant cells giving support and is made of cellulose
                  1. Mitochondrion - cylindrically shaped structure found within the cytoplasm of cells that is the site of energy release in aerobic respiration
                    1. Ribosome - small structure that is the site of protein synthesis in a cell
                    2. In multicelluar organisms, cells become specialised to perform particular functions. for example, the cells which line the cheek form a continous layer of cells that are the same size and shape, while cells in a leaf group themselves to form protective coverings or areas where photosynthesis takes place.
                      1. Yeast is an example of a fungus, that lives as a single celled organism.
                        1. Bacteria are single celled organisms.
                        2. KA 2 - Transport across cell membrane
                          1. Cell membrane
                            1. selectively permeable
                              1. allows small molecules such as oxygen and carbo dioxide pass through but not larger molecules such as proteins
                            2. Passive transport
                              1. diffusion
                                1. When a molecule moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration along a concentration gradient, a passive form of transport
                                2. Osmosis
                                  1. When water molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration along a concentration gradient, across a semi - permeable membrane, this a form of passive transport
                                3. Active Transport
                                  1. When a molecule moves from a area of low concentration to an area of low concentration against a concentration gradient, this is an active form of transport
