Characteristics of Plants
  1. Traits
    1. Eukayotes
      1. Eukaryote: an organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus. Eukaryotes include all living organisms other than the eubacteria and archaebacteria.
        1. Just like your body, eukaryotic cells are complex and require organization to keep everything running smoothly. A eukaryotic cell is a cell whose intracellular components are organized into membrane-bound organelles.
          1. Eukaryotic plant cells have all of the organelles that other eukaryotic cells have. However, they also contain specialized organelles that identify them as members of the Plant Kingdom.
        2. Multicellular
          1. Multicellular:of an organism or part) having or consisting of many cells
            1. Domain --> Kingdom --> Phylum --> Class --> Order --> Family --> Genus --> species
              1. The familiar plants, animals and fungi that we can see represent only a tiny fraction of life on Earth. These organisms, being made of more than one cell, are called multicellular.
            2. Producers
              1. Plants make their own food by using sunlight, carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the soil and converting it in the form of glucose/sugar.
                1. Sources of Food Flowers get their food from sunlight. Flowers are the reproductive parts of plants, and plants are unique among living things in that they make their own food in special cells called chloroplasts.
                  1. Did you know that there are producers that live in the water? The producers within an underwater ecosystem are called phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are like any other type of plant who changes the sun’s energy into food and they also provide oxygen to their fish friends. Seaweed and kelp are also ocean producers.
