  1. The Nitrogen Cycle
    1. Essential for the amino acids in proteins
      1. Explains how nitrogen is recycled
        1. Around 78% of the air is nitrogen
          1. Nitrogen has to be turned into nitrates for it to be used for plants because it is very unreactive
            1. The Haber Process converts nitrogen gas to ammonia
              1. Ammonia is used in fertilizers
                1. Ammonia is converted to nitrates by nitrifying bacteria in the soil
                  1. The Haber Process is reversible
                  2. Lightning can convert nitrogen gas to nitrate compounds

                    1. All living things are made of carbon

                        1. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
                          1. The animal (rabbit) that eats the plant will gain the carbon atoms from the plant and use them for growth and to build their own tissues
                            1. A different animal (fox) might eat the rabbit and therefore gain the carbon atoms from the rabbit to use for their own growth
                              1. The animals return the carbon dioxide to the air when they breathe or die
                                1. The carbon is returned to the soil for decomposition
                        2. The Structure Of The Earth

                            2. Volcanoes occur when molten rock pushes through weaknesses in the crust
                              1. The molten rock cools to form igneous rocks
                                1. Basalt is rich in iron
                                  1. It forms from runny lava produced in a safe volcanic erruption
                                  2. Rhyolite is rich in silica
                                    1. It forms from thick lava produced in an explosive erruption
                                  3. The crust and upper part of the mantle is broken into tectonic plates
                                    1. Tectonic plates move slowly over the mantle
                                      1. They move about 2.5cm per year
                                    2. The lithosphere consists of the crust and outer part of the mantle
                                      1. The lithosphere is broken into large pieces called tectonic plates
