Resource summary

Diabetes.
  1. Type 1
    1. Caused by lack of insulin.
      1. The pancreas produces little, or no insulin
        1. can be controlled in two ways
          1. Avoiding foods rich in simple carbohydrates, eg sugars.
            1. injecting insulin into the blood at meal time. This will make the liver remove the glucose as soon as it enters the blood through the gut.
              1. Insulin is usually injected into subcutaneous tissue (fatty tissue under the skin)
                1. The amount of insulin depends on the persons diet and how active they are.
                  1. Eating healthily reduces the amount of insulin that is needed.
                    1. Doing regular exersise also reduces the amount of insulin needed.
              2. Type 2
                1. A person is resistant to insulin
                  1. Pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or when a person becomes resistant to insulin
                    1. Obese people have high risk of developing it.
                      1. People are obese if their BMI is over 30
                        1. BMI= body mass / Height squared.
                      2. Can be controlled by
                        1. a healthy diet
                          1. Regular exercise
                            1. losing wieght
                          2. the blood glucose levels remain too high. It can be treated by injecting insulin. The extra insulin allows the glucose to be taken up by the liver and other tissues, so cells get the glucose they need and blood-sugar levels stay normal.
