    1. Included priests living under vows, known as clerk regular & orders for laypeople
      1. THEY DEVELOPED CAUSE:
        1. Dissatisfaction with existing orders of monks & friars (too established & it lost its zeal (energy)
          1. Wanted to express their love in a different way to withdrawing themseleves from the world (Caring for the sick, distribution of charity = very important as there were harvest failure, plagues & war)
            1. Satisfying the need for change in the change in the past was by making new orders (Franciscans, Augustinians, Dominicans came about in their criticism of monks & nuns living in enclosed communities)
              1. Eaiser to found a new order than change an existing one
              2. All these new orders benefitted the strengthening of the Catholic Church
                1. Provided the lay people with the chance to make a contribution to the Church through helping society
                  1. Supported by the Pope which increased their authority
                    1. Positive renewal taking place in the Catholic Church
                      1. BUT the new orders were small & situated mostly in the North of Italy
