Around the year 1841 howe heard of the
need for a machine that could sew.
He dedicated the next five years of
his free time to work on developing
the machine. After a few failures he
quit his job and just worked on the
invention. After quitting his job he
couldn't provide for his family so he
moved into his father's home. There
he finished his first successful
sewing machine in 1845.
The story really starts in 1755 in
London when a German immigrant,
Charles Weisenthal, took out a patent
for a needle to be used for mechanical
sewing. There was no mention of a
machine to go with it, and another 34
years were to pass before Englishman
Thomas Saint invented what is
generally considered to be the first real
sewing machine.

Before these inventions were released the fastest
anyone or anything had ever sewn was 50 stitches
per minute.
Details of inventions
Howe's machine had a needle with
an eye near the point. A shuttle
carried a thread below the cloth on a
small bobbin. The needle, carrying an
upper thread, was fastened to an
arm that vibrated on a pivot.
Movement of the arm forced the
needle through the cloth. T he shuttle
carried the under thread through the
loop of the upper thread, thus
making a lock stitch.
In 1790 the cabinet maker patented a
machine which made a hole in leather
and then allowed a needle to pass
through. Critics of Saint's claim to fame
point out that quite possibly Saint only
patented an idea and that most likely
the machine was never built. It is known
that when an attempt was made in the
1880s to produce a machine from Saint's
drawings it would not work without
considerable modification.
Impact on Society
The impact of the sewing machine by saint on America is
huge. Specifically the sewing machine greatly
impacted the textile industry and women.
Because women were the ones working in the
textile mills they were the ones to use the
machine. The sewing machine also helped other
industries grow, for example the need for large
quantities of thread for factory machines. Others
benefited from sewing machines such as metal
companies for needles and parts. Today, because
of the sewing machine, we have clothes, couches,
etc.
Nearly all sewing machines used in the home today are of this
double-thread, lock-stitch type. His sewing machine
revolutionized the country's industrial sector and made life
easier for countless housewives. it was the first product of the
Industrial Revolution specifically targeted at that huge
market. Elias Howe changed American life by inventing an
efficient sewing machine.
