P1.2- Using energy
  1. Forms of energy
    1. Energy exists in different forms such as:
      1. Light: sunlight
        1. Sound: Guitars
          1. Kinetic: energy in moving objects.
            1. Nuclear
              1. Electrical: lightning
                1. Gravitational potential: skydivers
                  1. Elastic potential: catapult
                    1. Chemical: organic foods
                    2. Energy can be transferred from one form to another.
                      1. Any object abouve ground has gravitational potential energy
                        1. A falling object transfers gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy
                        2. Conservation of energy
                          1. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It is only possible to transfer it from one form to another, or from one place to another. This means that the total amount of energy is always the same. This is called the conservation of energy and it applies to all energy transfers.
                            1. In a solar cell, light energy is transferred to electrical energy.
                              1. Stretching an elastic band transfers chemical energy to elastic potential energy.
                                1. When an object falls, gravitational potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy.
                                2. Energy and efficiency
                                  1. Energy is measured in joules (j).
                                    1. input energy = useful energy + energy wasted
                                      1. Efficiency of an appliance= (useful energy transferred by the appliance/total energy supplied to the appliance)*100
                                        1. No machine can be 100% efficient
                                          1. Measures to make machine more efficient include reducing: friction, air resistance, electrical resistance, noise due to vibractions
                                            1. Efficiency is a ratio. This means that it has no unit.
                                              1. Energy transfer through an appliance can be representedd with a Sankey diagram.
                                              2. Useful energy
                                                1. Useful energy is energy in the place we want it and the form we need it.
                                                  1. Wasted energy is energy that is not useful energy.
                                                    1. Useful energy and wasted energy both end up being transferred to the surroundings, which become warmer.
                                                      1. As energy spreads out, it gets more and more difficult to use for further energy transfers.
