Present Simple

  1. Habitual actions

    1. Ex: The Earth is round
2. Structure
  1. Negative Sentences
    1. Subject + Auxiliar Verb (do / does) + NOT + Verb
      1. Ex: Sara doesn't work on Sunday
      2. Ex: They don't have a big house
  2. Affirmative Sentences
    1. Subject + VERB
      1. I / you / we / they
        Ex: work (simple form of VERB)
      2. He / she / it
        Ex: workS (VERB+s)
  3. Interrogative Sentences
    1. Auxiliar Verb (do / does) + Subject + Verb
      1. Do you talk?
      2. Does he eat?
3. Rules
  1. Most verbs take -s in third person singular
    1. Ex: dance - dances, read - reads
  2. Verbs ending in -ss, -sh, -ch, -x take -es
    1. Ex: kiss - kisses, wash - washes
  3. Verbs ending in a consonant + y, drop the y and takes -ies
    1. Ex: study - studies
  4. Verbs ending in a vowel + y, take -s
    1. play -plays, enjoy - enjoys
Present Continuous
1. Use
  1. A temporary situation
    1. Ex: Lisa is living with friends until she finds an apartment
  2. Something that is happening NOW
    1. Ex: He is playing soccer
2. Structure
  1. Negative Sentences
    1. For this tense, simply ADD the word NOT after the verbe BE
      1. Ex: They are NOT working today
  2. Affirmative Sentences
    1. I am + VERB -ing
      1. Ex: I am cleaning my house this week
    2. He / she / it + VERB -ing
      1. Ex: Everyone is studying hard
    3. You / we / they + VERB -ing
      1. They are celebrating their 40th anniversary today
  3. Interrogative Sentences
    1. BE + Subject + Verb+ing
      1. Am I going?
      2. Are you eating?
