Applications – distributes programmes to computers and
monitors for their use, can also be used to update
programmes when the manufacturer releases updates
Printer – clients connect to the
print server and download drivers
of the printer, monitors printing
and record who is printing what
and how many copies, allocate
priority to print jobs
Mail – stores mailboxes of individual users,
sends and receives mail and distributes
messages to the user, can have filters for
obscenity large attachments and viruses
File – controls the storage, access files
stored in the user area, files stored
centrally on file server, controls access
rights so only authorised people access
particular files, provide a shared area
multiple people can access
Backup – backing up and restoring files
folders and databases, can be on a schedule,
may have storage attached which does not
have to be in the same physical location
Proxy – sits between network and the internet,
allows the machine in the network to be anonymous,
acts as a single point for passing requests to and
from the internet, speeds up web access by having a
cache of web pages, has a set of rules
Firewall Keep a network
secure, two types: software
and hardware, uses a set of
rules to examine the incoming
and outgoing data packets to
see whether they should be
let through or blocked
Optical Communications
Fibre-optic Transmission of light
through a transparent cable
Laser Sending and
receiving a laser beam
Infrared Used mainly in remote
controls to communicate with a TV,
DVD or video player/recorded
Wireless Communication
There is no physical connection as data is
transmitted by electro-magnetic waves, line of sight is
not required as devices can communicate from
different locations within a specified distance, smaller
range of frequencies available meaning the available
bandwidth is less, signal attenuated over a distance
which restricts the useable range
Advantages – no need for physical cables, device can work
anywhere within the range of a WAP, can work through walls as
long as the signal is not too weak, phones can roam the internet
using home network without incurring expensive 3G charges,
sufficient bandwidth for most internet use, Wi-Fi certified
devices are compatible
