1914 - Invaded East
Germany but was
defeated by their
much smaller army
1915 - Germany launched a series
of offensives against the Russian
army. The Russians were beaten
and lost large areas of territory.
1916 - Russians did win some
victories against Austrian and
regained some territory. However
German army then attacked for
Austrian and Russia was defeat.
An estimated two million soldiers were
killed, during the course of the war. Morale
during this time was very low and soldiers
and civilians were looking for someone to
blame.
Tsar Nicholas II took command of the army in
1915. He left St. Petersburg and moved to army
headquarters in Russian Poland. Tsar knew little
about the command and organisation of large
military forces, and defeats and humiliations
continued. The organisation deteriorated and there
were massive shortages of ammunition,
equipment, and medical supplies. Russian people
saw Nicholas as being personal responsibility for
the military disasters inflicted on Russia.
Rasputin
He advised the Tsarina on
appointments to the government; he
interfered in important decisions; he
could do no wrong in the Tsarina's
eyes - excuses were always made for
his excessive, antisocial behaviour.
To the Russian people,
Rasputin symbolised everything
that was wrong with imperial
government. The court and the
imperial family became objects
of ridicule and were despised. .
Agriculture
Millions of peasant farmers were conscripted
into the army. This led to a serious shortage
of manpower on the farms and a
corresponding fall in production.
By 1916, there were serious shortages
of food in the city shops and the price of
even the most basic foods was rising
steeply.
