Plant Hormones
  1. Auxin and tropisms
    1. Phototropisms- response to light.
      1. 1, 2 & 3) When a shoot tip is exposed to light more auxin accumulates in the side that's in the SHADE
        1. 4) This makes the cells grow faster on the SHADED side to the plant grows TOWARDS the light.
      2. Geotropisms- response to gravity.
        1. 1) When a shoot is growing on its side, gravity produces an unequal balance of auxin. MORE auxin accumulates on the LOWER side.
          1. 2)This causes the lower side to grow upwards (AWAY from gravity) faster
          2. However it is different in roots.
            1. 1) A root growing sideways will accumulate more auxin on its lower side. However this auxin inhibits growth and so the cells on the TOP side grow FASTER and the plant curves DOWNWARDS
          3. Hydrotropisms- reactions to water
            1. Roots grow towards water. so produces MORE auxin on the side with MORE water
              1. This causes the plant to move towards the water because the auxin inhibits growth on that side so the plant bends.
          4. What is auxin?
            1. Hormone that controls growth near tips of shoots and roots.
              1. PROMOTES growth in the SHOOTS and INHIBITS growth in the ROOTS
              2. Controls growth in response to tropisms (geo- , hydro- & photo-)
                1. Produced in the tips and works backwards to stimulate cell elongation
                  1. If the tip is removed, the plant may stop growing as no auxin is available
                2. Hormones in agriculture.
                  1. Can be extracted and used by people for:
                    1. Selective weedkillers. Most weeds are broad leaved unlike the grasses and cereals. The weedkillers are made of growth hormones.
                      1. These hormones only affect the broad leaved plants and disrupts their growth pattern so the die.
                      2. Rooting Powder.
                        1. The auxin in the powder means the plant cuttings produce roots quickly and start growing as new plants.
                          1. Great way of cloning plants quickly
