Resource summary
Upper and Lower Bounds
This is a why distinguish that the actual 'number' is anyway between these two points
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Find the last digit and what is its place value (e.g. H T U t h) or the amount of sig. figures
2) Divide the place value by two
3) Subtract and add the answer from the previous step to the original number
The higher number is the upper bound and the lower the lower bound
1200 (2 sig figs) lower and upper bound = 1250, 1150
Tips
For maximum values use the upper bound of x and the lower bound of y
"appropiate degree of accuracy means that you find the last possible point where the numbers will round to be the same
Use this reason "The upper and lower bounds both agree to this number of figures"
