The Stock Market
crashed in 1929
meaning stocks lost
their value and many
became bankrupt.
This is known as
THE WALL STREET
CRASH
Banks began to close
People saw that
the banks were
closing and
rushed to
withdraw their
own cash
This overwhelmed the
system and caused yet
more banks to close. This
meant people could not
withdraw their savings and
were very poor
During previous depressions, farmers were okay
because they did not rely on banks to make
money.
However, this time there was a
very large drought across
Oklahoma, meaning farmers were
also hit hard as their crops also
died, meaning they too become
poor.
The dry conditions meant
lots of dust was lying around,
and many dust storms
happened in the 30s
The area that was
flooded by dust was
known as the Dust
Bowl
1930s
Women
The women played the role of
the home-maker and mother.
Despite the Great Depression causing many
redundancies, the women still were
discouraged from pursuing a career for extra
financial support for their families.
During this era, women
began to go against
convention and pursue a
career, but it was still not
the stereotype.
Women had less career
opportunities than men...
Women were believed to be
naturally weaker than men in
physical jobs, and were not as
intellectual as the male race.
Had a lower
minimum wage
than men
Women had fewer legal rights
than men.
Women were seen as objects
Women who were married were defined by their husband.
They had to give up
their name and property
to their spouse, and
became wholly
independent on the man
1930s
Elderly
Were treated with
disrespect and had to live
in poor housing
They had to clean, cook
and look after their
families, but no one would
care for them.
State government built poor
housing for the elderly.
Unable to earn an income,
and lost all savings in the
great depression
