Resource summary
Stage of Mitosis
Interphase
Looks similar to normal phase.
Not considered a phase of mitosis
A period of intense metabolic activity prior to mitosis
G1 phase
Cell prepare for cell replication and organelles reproduce
S phase
Synthesis of DNA, replication of genetic material
G2 phase
Last stage of Interphase
Prophase
Nucleus disintergrates
Spindle Fibers forms at the two opposite poles
Chromatin condenses
Centrioles migrates to poles
Takes approximately 6 minutes to complete
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Centromeres line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase
Chromosomes (centromeres separate slowly)
Arms of the chromatids pull the centromeres apart
Spindle fibers get shorter and thicker
Spindle fibers help pull the centromeres apart
This is the most rapid phase of Mitosis
Telophase
Nucleus starts to form again
Cytokinesis occurs and cell divides
Two daughter cells are formed identical to the parent cell
