• 1946-1953 she served as secretary of montgomery, Alabama branch of NAACP December 1, 1955 She was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man on a public bus  December 5, 1955 was the first day of the 381 day boycott of the Montgomery bus system

1. Montgomery Bus Boycott

   Annotations:

   • The boycott lasted for 381 days(December 5, 1995- December 20, 1956) The Supreme court ordered the Montgomery bus system to integrate its bus system on December 20, 1956 The integration was in affect on December 21, 1956 this ended the boycott  

Annotations:

• On September 4, 1957 nine black students attended an all white school called Central High school in little rock, Arkansas On the first day of school the Governor called the state national guard to block the blacks students entry into the high school  The "Little Rock Nine" started their first full day of classes on September 25 after President Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the students around the school

1. Brown v. Board of Education

   Annotations:

   • This court case overturned the Plessy vs. Ferguson of 1896 which declared separate but equal constitutional  Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas on May 17, 1954 the Supreme court ruled that separate but equal was unconstitutional  A year later the court published guidelines which required federal district courts to supervise school desegregation

• Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous " I have a dream" speech This march was organized by six major leaders of the civil right movement John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney M. Young Jr., A. Phillip  No arrest on the marchers were made and no reports concerning the marchers were reported

• The United farm workers organizing committee was initiated as an independent organization in Delano, California led by Cesar Chavez in 1962  The Mexican American Youth Organization was formed on Texas college campuses in 1967 In 1975 the voting rights of 1965 was extended to Hispanic Americans

• The birth control pill was introduced in 1960 A youth group was called hippies were developed during this time   These youth (a.k.a. Hippies) experienced mind altering illegal drugs

• In 1964 congress passed the civil rights act prohibiting sexual discrimination  The National Organization for Women was formed in 1966 Congress pass the equal credit opportunity in 1974

• August 6, 1965 this act was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders were present at the ceremony which the act was signed into  law  This act banned the use of literacy tests
