Argyle, Alkema and Gilmour - Participants either heard friends or hostile messages
either said in a friendly tone. e.g. Hostile message in friendly tone. When participants
were asked to interperet message it was found that tone of voice had around 5 times
the effect of the message itself.
Tone of voice very important in portraying messages
Davitz and Davitz - Participants told to listen to a tape
and identify the persons' emotions from the
paralinguistic cues. Tone of voice, emphasis and
intonation. Very hight accuracy in recognising the
emotions: affection, amusement, disgust and fear
