1. Pets
  1. Kept at home such as cats, dog, etc.
  2. To keep people company
  3. Easier to have relationship with pets tha humans
  4. For people living without humans
2. Clothing
  1. Cows and sheep for leather/wool anf fur for coats
  2. Ivory from elephant for jewellery
  3. Used for warmth, comfort, fashion , etc.
3. Genetic Engineering
  1. to profuce 'better' animals e.g more wool from sheep
  2. Develop new medicine
  3. is when the genes of an animal are altered by scientists to benefit us.
4. Cloning
  1. make a copy of something
  2. to help medical research
    1. e.g Dolly the sheep
5. Transport and Work
  1. horses, camels, donkeys used for transport
  2. dogs: guide, herd, sniffer dogs
  3. Cheaper
  4. can do things we cant
6. Entertainment
  1. Non-violent sport such as horse and dog racing
  2. Blood sport where animals are killed e.g fox hunting
  3. Circuses

  1. Factory Farming
    1. where animals are kept confined in order to produce cheap food
  2. Free range farming
    1. animals have access to outdoor - not cages
8. Experimentation
  1. research for medicine
  2. drugs, make-up, household products
  3. 3 million animals used a year
9. Zoos
  1. Place to keep animals in artificial environment so they can be shown
  2. Learn about them and can protect them
Difference between animals and humans
1. Free Will
  1. Animals act on instinct whereas humans can make their own decisions
  2. BUT some argue animals act freely as well
2. Souls
  1. Humans have souls whereas animals do not
    1. "God made man in his own image"
  2. Non-religious people do not believe humans or animals have a soul
3. Intelligence
  1. Humans are more intelligent and can do many things e.g create technology, read and write
  2. Some animals are more advanced mentally than young children
Christian views
1. Humans are the most special part of God's creation therefore we are more important than animals
  1. "God made man in his own image" - Similar to god whereas animals aren't
2. Animals are still part of God's creation and they are valuable because of that
  1. Genesis - states God created all animals on Earth
    1. Also states God "blessed" the animals showing concern for them
3. Most Christians think that we must be STEWARDS of the Earth
  1. We ought to guard it and be responsible for it including the animals
    1. "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it" - Genesis
4. Some Christians think that we have DOMINION over animals - we are allowed to use them in any way we want
  1. "Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground" - Genesis
  2. St Thomas Aquinas said animals do not have souls so we can treat them how we like
Hindu teachings
1. Ahimsa
  1. Hindu teaching meaning do no harm
  2. Rule of conduct that bans the killing or injuring of living beings
  3. Applies especially to cows - sacred to Hinduism
2. Reincarnation
  1. The belief that the soul after death comes back to Earth in another body: animals are part of this cycle
3. Karma
  1. The way in which a person's actions will affect what happens to them in the future
    1. Good actions = Good consequence to a person
    2. Bad actions = bad consequences
4. Animals have souls
  1. Regard all animals as having souls but more basic than human souls
  2. Having a soul means to be part of ultimate reality - Brahman
