Intelligence
Humans are more intelligent and can do many things e.g create technology, read and write
Some animals are more advanced mentally than young children
Christian views
Humans are the most special part of God's creation therefore we are more important than animals
"God made man in his own image" - Similar to god whereas animals aren't
Animals are still part of God's creation and they are valuable because of that
Genesis - states God created all animals on Earth
Also states God "blessed" the animals showing concern for them
Most Christians think that we must be STEWARDS of the Earth
We ought to guard it and be responsible for it including the animals
"The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it" - Genesis
Some Christians think that we have DOMINION over animals - we are allowed to use them in any way we want
"Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground" - Genesis
St Thomas Aquinas said animals do not have souls so we can treat them how we like
Hindu teachings

Karma

Good actions = Good consequence to a person
Bad actions = bad consequences
Animals have souls
Regard all animals as having souls but more basic than human souls
Having a soul means to be part of ultimate reality - Brahman
