  1. Mega cities are the world's largest cities with 10 or more million habitants.
    1. Demographic factors influencing city growth:
      1. NATURAL POPULATION INCREASE: there are more births over deaths,
        1. RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION: more people are moving from rural areas to urban cities.
        2. Causes of rural-urban migration:
          1. Poverty, inequality, & lack of investment
            1. Lack of economic opportunities (lack of jobs)
              1. The concentration of investment & employment in towns & cities
                1. 80% of the worlds GDP is generated by urban areas.
                2. Consequences of rapid urban growth:
                  1. Create over crowding in cities which will lead to environmental issues e.g. pollution
                    1. Create extreme poverty, slums, resource depletion & environmental degration
                    2. Urbanisation stages:
                      1. IMMATURE: urbanisation, slums dominate, barely basic needs, 60%+ live in slums, environmental problems, e.g. Lagos
                        1. CONSOLIDATING: urbanisation & suburbanisation, some social housing, basic needs, attempts to deal with water supply & congestion, e.g. Mumbai, Choingqing
                          1. MATURING: suburbanisation, attempts at creating housing & transport, quality of life is satisfactory, e.g. Mexico
                            1. ESTABLISHED: reurbanisation, high quality of life, good environmental quality, e.g. London
                            2. Sustainable mega cities:
                              1. Improving slum housing: create electricity links, stable housing.
                                1. Improving health & environment: improve sanitation - clean water, sewage systems
                                  1. Transport & environment: bio-fuel in public transport, limit amount of days you can use your car
