  1. 1. NEW GOVERNMENT TOOK OVER WHEN KAISER ABDICATED
    1. New Government led by Friedrich Ebert
      1. Leader of Social Democratic Party
        1. Ebert became 1st President
          1. Scheidemann as Chancellor
          2. Germany now a Republic
            1. Republic set up in February 1919 @ Weimar
            2. Signed the Armistice on 11/11/1918
              1. New government DEMOCRATIC
                1. Democratic - believe people should say how country run
              2. 2.WEIMER REPUBLIC HAD MANY PROBLEMS
                1. It was difficult to make decisions because there were so many parties in the Reichstag
                  1. It was hard to pick a Chancellor who had the support of most of the Reichstag
                    1. New Government had to accept post war treaties so they were hated by many Germans because of loss of territory war guilt clause
                      1. There were outbreaks of trouble and Freikorps were formed - a body of soldiers to keep the peace
                      2. 3.REASONS FOR DISCONTENT
                        1. A. 1000 of people were poor & starving
                          1. B.influenza epidemic had killed 1000
                            1. C.Many Germans denied they had lost the war & blamed the November Criminals who had agreed to Armistice & Treaty of Versailles
                              1. D. Others blamed for losing the war included the Communists the Government & Jews
                                1. E. Government was seen as weak & ineffective
                                  1. Treaty of Versailles had made living conditions WORSE in Germany
                                2. 4. RIOTS & REBELLIONS STARTED
                                  1. a.1919 communists led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemberg tried to take over Berlin in the Spartacist Revolt but they were defeated by Freikorps
                                    1. B. 1920 - some of right wing Freikorps took part in Kapp Putsch revolt led by Kapp
                                      1. They took over Berlin
                                        1. Formed another government
                                          1. Workers staged a Strike
                                            1. Kapp gave up
                                            2. Government didnt punish rebels because many judges sympathised with Kapp
                                            3. 1922 Walter Rathenau was killed (Foreign Minister) who signed Rapello treaty with Russia & was Jewish
                                            4. 5.1923 GERMANY COULDN'T PAY THE REPARATIONS
                                              1. A, France & Belgium occupied the Ruhr - richest industrial part of Germany
                                                1. Took the resources
                                                  1. Germans furious & refused to work
                                                    1. German industry devastated again
                                                      1. economy went into hyperinflation
                                                        1. this happens when production cant keep up with the amount of money there is so money keeps losing value
                                                    2. B. HYPERINFLATION HAD 3 MAJOR RESULTS
                                                      1. WAGES paid twice a day
                                                        1. Middle class lost out as Bank savings became worthless
