Thailand has a monsoon climate, as it is
on the equator. The temperature vary by
about 3 degrees each year, around 26 -
29 degrees celsius, but it gets heavy rain
called a monsoon.
Step 1
There is a period of dryness
(from December - April) where
the land soaks up the heat of the
sun. The ocean also heats up,
but the lands does much faster.
Step 2
As the land heats up, hot air from it rises
and condenses high up, and lower down
an area of low pressure is formed.
Step 3
Cool, wet air from the ocean
comes inland to balance the
pressure difference
underneath the hot air.
Step 4
Clouds are formed as the two airs
mix together, and then everything
condenses completely and forms a
period of massive rain called a
monsoon.
The effects on Thai people
Firstly, it impacts the tourist
industry as it makes Thailand
only enjoyable for half the year,
meaning that lots of people
would be unemployed, as
tourism makes up 6% of its GDP.
Secondly, when it gets bad, like the 2011
floods, it can damage industry, make people
homeless or even kill them.
Tourism
Events that have affected
this in Thailand
The Boxing Day Tsunami happened in 2004
and killed thousands of people, tourists and
locals alike. After the tsunami, tourism in
certain places dropped by 93%! This terrible
event was caused when a magnitude 9
earthquake happened in the Indian Ocean.
The Thailand 2011 floods was ranked as the world's fourth
costliest disaster at the time, and it cost the government
almost 40 billion USD. This affected the northern parts of
Thailand up to Bangkok.
There was a SARS outbreak (severe acute
respiratory sickness) that affected tourism
badly as this disease is very contagious.
The Pros and Cons
Social
People are forced to
move out of their homes
to make way for tourist
facilities,
Prices are cheaper than
ever, making it easier for
tourists to go to Thailand,
and they can learn about
its cultures and customs.
Environmental
Tourists litter and leave
their trash everywhere,
harming the environment.
The government gains more
money to clean up the area
and make it look nice for
tourists.
Economic
However, before this happens, the
government has to build roads and
other things. When everything is
done, even though people have a job,
they still have to pay tourist prices,
meaning that they live poorly.
More jobs are created so
people can earn money and
businessmen can earn more
money. The government can
then collect more tax.
Sustainable Tourism is...
...making as low an impact on the environment and local culture as
possible, while helping to create future employment for local people
and therefore benefit the society socially, economically and
environmentally.
