    1. Why? didn't like the way the army was treated, didnt like the actions of the SS death quad as it went against army code of conduct
      1. What? Tried to kill Hitler a few times, (planted a bomb in Hitler's suitcase)
        1. Punishment? Stauffenberg and Back were rounded up, tortured and executed by fire squad
        2. Edeweiss Pirates
          1. Why? opposed nazi regime, wanted to have fun and not be told what to do
            1. What? Passive resistance (refused to join Hitler Youth), drank, listened to music, had sex, made rude alternatives to nazi songs
              1. Punishment? many were beaten and head shaven, a group of 12 hung for revenge for killing the head of Cologne Gestapo
              2. Martin Niemoller
                1. Why? believed the Reich church focused on Nazism not christianity
                  1. What? refused to swear loyalty oath to Fuhrer, spoke out against the arrest of christian ministers, set up confessional church to speak out against Nazi's
                    1. Punishment? arrested in 1937, 7 months in prison, sent to Sachsenhausen camp after he was released from prison and continued to speak out, released 7 years later by allies in 1945
                    2. Poplitical Opponents
                      1. Why? trade unions wanted workers rights, socialists party wanted a return to democracy, communists wanted a revolution
                        1. What? 400 strikes between 1933-1935
                          1. Punishment? 1933, offices of political opponent leaders ransacked, beaten, tortured, killed, 2/3rds of the communists party arrested
                          2. White Rose group
                            1. Why? Hans and Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst, disagreed with nazi aims and treatment of jews, as a medical student Hans saw first hand treatment of jews, non-aryans
                              1. spread anti-nazi messages in leaflets, "we will not be silent, we are your bad consciounce, the white rose group will never leave you in peace"
                                1. Punishment? arrested and tortured, Sophie's leg broken in the process, 22nd February 1943 sentanced to death and executed by the Guillotine
                                2. Dietrich Bonhoffer
                                  1. Why? opposed nazi beliefs on race and euthanasia
                                    1. What? 1935 he spoke out against Nuremburg Laws, helped to set up "operation 7" helped a small group of jews escape to Switzerland
                                      1. Punishment? April 1942 he was arrested (accused of plotting against Hitler), executed by the SS April 1945
