                              1. cheka requisition squads were sent into the country sides to take the grain by force
                                1. lenin gave instructions that 100 kulaks were to be hung in public in order to terrify the population.
                                  1. food became less available knowing it would just be taken away, they only produced for them and their familys
                                    1. bolsheviks believed it was due to the peasants hoarding the grain which wasn't true

                              1. the combination of grain requisitioning and drought and the general disruption of war.
                                1. 1921: 1 in 5 were starving

                                  2. matters became desperate, number of countries supplied Russia with aid. the USA provided food for some 10 million russians.
