Resource summary

C1.2.1 Calcium carbonate
  1. Limestone
    1. Is mainly composed of the compound calcium carbonate
      1. CaCO3
        1. can be decomposed by heating (thermal decomposition)
          1. to make carbon dioxide and
            1. calcium oxide: CaO
              1. reacts with water to produce
                1. calcium hydroxide: Ca(OH)2
                  1. this is a an alkali and thus can be used in the neutralisation of acids
                    1. aqueous solution of this (limewater) + carbon dioxide
                      1. limewater is a test for carbon dioxide, the positive result of which turns it cloudy
                        1. This cloudiness is a precipiate: CaCO3
              2. the carbonates of magnesium, copper, zinc, calcium, and sodium thermally decompose in a similar way
                1. all decompose with heat to produce carbon dioxide and the metal oxide
          2. Is quarried and can be used as a building material
            1. However, carbonates react with acids to form carbon dioxide, a salt and water
              1. Therefore limestone buildings are damaged by acid rain
          3. Limestone is heated with clay to make cement
            1. Cement is mixed with sand to make mortar
              1. Cement is mixed with sand and aggregate to make concrete
