A major influence on monsoon climates (and
the role of the ITCZ subtropical anticyclones)
It occurs where the northeast trade winds
blowing away from the subtropical high
pressure cell in the northern hemisphere
meet the SE trade winds from the
subtropical high pressure cell in the
southern hemisphere
Winds are light and are known as the doldrums
Air is warm and unstable as it has
crossed the oceans and rises due to convection currents
As the air rises it cools
and large
cumulonimbus clouds
develop, pressure is
low - and rain
It moves north and
south of the
equator, following
the movement of
the sun
