When talking about one particular thing i.e. when the speaker knows which particular thing they have in mind.e.g.I'm going to the doctor tomorrow morning. - the speaker is going to their usual doctor - not any doctor.Can I use the computer? I need to print my document. - the speaker wants to use a particular computer.

2. When it's clear in the situation i.e. there is no doubt to anyone what thing the speaker is talking about e.g.Can you turn on the lights please - if your in a room then it's clear which lightsOpen the window please - again, it's clear that the window in the room is the subject.

3. Only one of something i.e. when it's clear that there is only one of the thing.The sky is blue - there is only one skyIt's the longest river in the world - there is nothing longer

4. Other times when you use 'the':the + nationality - the Irish, the FrenchAlways use with some words: - the theatre, the radio
