Golden Compass Character List
Lyra Belacqua
Lyra is the main character of the Golden Compass, She is from Oxford England and lives at Jordan College.
Lyra is the daughter of Lord Asriel and Mrs.Coulter . Lyra is 11 years old, and her Daemon is named
Pantalaimon. At Jordan College, Lyra is rambunctious and always getting into trouble, but she is important
because she plays a huge role into the fate of mankind. Lyra is able to read the Alethiometer, and is known
to the witches as the girl who will bring about the end of destiny.
Lyra is significant because She is destined to play a huge part in the fate of mankind, but she has to live her destiny without knowing that it is
her destiny
"Yes. Lyra has a part to play in all this, and a major one. The irony is that she must do it all without realizing
what she's doing. She can be helped, though, and if my plan with the Tokay had succeeded, she would have
been safe for a little longer. I would have liked to spare her a journey to the North. I wish above all things
that I were able to explain it to her..." (2.140)
Another Reason Lyra is significant is because she makes the transition from child to adulthood and lost her innocence along the
way
Loss of innocence is similar to Adam and Eve who ate the forbidden fruit, and where subsequently kicked out of the Gaden of
Eden
The force infringing on Lyra, and making her lose her innocence, is not her own sin, but instead the General Oblation board, and the
gobblers
