| When one insulating material is rubbed with another electrically charged material it can become electrically charged. Why is this? | This due to the transfer of electrons. Electrons carry negative charge. The electrons transfer from one material to the other, leaving one material with a positive charge and the other with a negative charge. The atoms or molecules that become charged are then called ions. |
| How can you discharge electricity and how does this process work? | By earthing it. When an object discharges, electrons are transferred from the charged object to the earth. If you become electrically charged, earthing can result in you gaining an electric shock. |

What ways are there of reducing the problems of static electricity? | Anti static sprays, liquids and cloths help to reduce the problems of static electricity by preventing the transfer of charge from one insulator to another. |
