Questão Responda
When one insulating material is rubbed with another electrically charged material it can become electrically charged. Why is this? This due to the transfer of electrons. Electrons carry negative charge. The electrons transfer from one material to the other, leaving one material with a positive charge and the other with a negative charge. The atoms or molecules that become charged are then called ions.
How can you discharge electricity and how does this process work? By earthing it. When an object discharges, electrons are transferred from the charged object to the earth. If you become electrically charged, earthing can result in you gaining an electric shock.
What is one problem with static electricity? Some places such as flour mills and petrochemical factories, have atmospheres that contain extremely flammable gas or high concentrations of fine particles. A discharge/spark can leas to an explosion which can be very dangerous.
Two insulating materials with the same charge will repel each other. What will two materials with different charges do? They will attract each other
Give 3 ways you can reduce the chance of receiving an electric shock Ensuring that appliances are correctly earthed Using insulation mats effectively Wearing shoes with insulating soles
Lorries that contain flammable gases, liquids or powders need to be earthed before unloading as friction can cause a build up of charge and lead to a spark which could then ignite the flammable substance. What ways are there of reducing the problems of static electricity? Anti static sprays, liquids and cloths help to reduce the problems of static electricity by preventing the transfer of charge from one insulator to another.
