| The Bushido Code and seppuku | Like the code of chivalry, the Bushido code was a code of honour that the samurai had to follow. An example is benevolence- showing kindness towards others and those in need. Seppuku: Ritual suicide. This occurred when the samurai was captured in battle- it was an act to spare their family from disgrace. |
| The Red Seal and sakoku. | The Red Seal was a permit that allowed boats to dock in the Japanese harbours to trade. Only 12 European and 11 Chinese boats were allocated these ever. Sakoku: the isolation period where no one was allowed to leave or enter Japan. |
