EARLY LIFE
1. Born on April 22nd 1870 into an upper middle class family
  1. Simbirsk, Russia
  2. Father was inspector of schools, died in 1886
  3. In 1887 his brother was executed for trying to plot the assassination of the Tsar
  4. After brother's death, took up revolutionary ways
2. Kicked out of school when he was a teenager for taking part in political demonstration
3. Studied law and lived with relatives
  1. Passed Law exams in 1891, but law soon took a back seat to his revolutionary activity
    1. Made name for himself in Russian Marxism
JAIL
1. In 1895, sent to Siberia
2. Married Nadezhda Krupskaya who he met in St. Petersburg underground movement
3. First Russian Marxist Party Formed - the Social Democrats
  1. In 1903 had second Congress in Brussels and London
    1. Party split in two - Bolsheviks and Mensheviks
      1. Lenin was leader of Bolsheviks
4. Exile ended in 1900, moved to West Europe, publishing revolutionary newspaper (the Spark)
REVOLUTION
1. The Tsar got through the 1905 revolution but WWI was taking its toll
2. In 1917, the Tsarist government fell
3. Lenin travelled from exile in Switzerland in a sealed train from Germany - Germans helped him
4. March - November 1917: Russia Ruled by Provisional Government
  1. Many miscalculations made and the strain of WWI led Lenin and the Bolsheviks to a majority
POWER
1. Quickly made peace with Germans
2. Red Terror: Killed many Mensheviks and peasants (some were put in concentration camps)
  1. Caused famine in 1921 killing 5 million
3. By 1922, Lenin was leader of a United Russia - the USSR
4. Suffered two strokes in 1922 and a third in 1923, stripping him of his speech
  1. Died in 1924
5. Josef Stalin takes over - Lenin had warned the government about him before his death
6. Lenin was made a Saint and body was in Moscow until 1991 when the USSR collapsed
