The Raven (by Edgar Allan Poe) Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door— Only this and nothing more.” Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Question 2

Question
(UNIOESTE PR/2015) Seven portions of fruit and vegetables are better for you For many years, the nutrition message has been “five a day” – the recommendation that five portions of fruit and vegetables are enough to keep disease at bay and help us to live longer. That advice has been revised upwards. A new study suggests that people who get seven or more portions a day are healthier. Researchers from University College London studied the dietary habits of 65,000 adults over a seven-year period. They concluded that: “A robust inverse association exists between fruit and vegetable consumption and mortality, with benefits seen in up to 7-plus portions daily.” In other words, if you eat more fruit and vegetables, chances are you live longer. The researchers put people into five different groups, depending on how much fruit and veg they ate. They found that those who ate seven or more portions a day had a 42 percent lower risk of death than those who ate just one portion. They recommended that schools serve healthier meals and that supermarkets put more emphasis on prominently displaying cheaper produce. They warned that frozen and canned fruit was linked to higher mortality rates. Some experts say the findings of the study should be taken with a pinch of salt. One dietician said the findings ignored the fact that people who eat more fruit and veg are generally wealthier and thus lead lifestyles that will help them live longer anyway. Adapted from: http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/1404/140403-fruit-and-vegetables.html Na frase “They found that those who ate seven or more portions a day…”, o pronome “they” refere-se a:
Answer
  • diferentes grupos.

Question 8

Question
(UNESP SP/2006) Knee repair New ways of fixing the most troublesome joint By Daren Briscoe. Knees are the bane of all athletes, but they’re particularly nettlesome to aging amateurs, whose joints have endured years of pounding. Fortunately, some of the technology inspired by doctors who treat professional athletes is trickling down to weekend warriors. Scientists are working on a number of strategies to coax the body’s healing powers to hasten the repair of damaged knee cartilage. The knee is particularly tricky because it gets such little blood from the circulatory system, so it’s slow to heal. A technique called microfracture surgery is designed to draw blood to the injury. It involves making tiny holes in the bone on either side of the knee socket so that blood from inside the bone can seep up and nourish torn cartilage, supplying it with stem cells needed to repair. Doctors have been refining the technique for the past decade or so, and it’s now achieving its mainstream. The problem is that it’s difficult to control exactly where cartilage is replaced. With a new technique, called chondrocyte-transplant therapy, doctors avoid this problem by removing cartilage cells from the knee, growing them in a culture and transplanting the new tissue directly in the knee. This procedure, though, calls for opening up the knee twice, which is costly and makes for a long recovery. Question 9

Question
(UNITAU SP/2015) Why National Geographic is a Family Affair When Gilbert M. Grosvenor retired from the board of trustees of the National Geographic Society on June 21, 2014 – 60 years to the day after he started working here – he left an organization built by five generations of his family. (His daughter, obstetrician Alexandra Grosvenor Eller, continues the tradition: She was elected to the National Geographic board in 2009.) As the editor in chief of the magazine, president of the Society, and then chairman of the board, Grosvenor has helped broaden National geographic’s reach through chidren’s publications, local-language editions of the magazine and books, television, and geography education. You should premed at Yale. What made you change course and come to work at the National Geographic Society? Between my junior and senior years I went to the Netherlands on a summer program to rebuild dikes washed out by the great flood of 1953. I photographed and co-authored a story that was published in the magazine. Although I’m not sure I realized it at the time, it changed my life. I discovered the power of journalism. And that’s what we are all about – recording those chronicles of planet Earth. Your geography education foundation essentially restored the study of geography to the American classroom. Why is geography so important? Geography is an essential part of STEM [science, technology, engineering, and mathemaics] education. We need to do better with that. To understand environmental issues and the dynamics of Earth you have to understand geography. Why is it that a botlle released off the coast of Florida ends up in Ireland? That’s the Gulf Stream at work. What about global warming, the dramatic shift north of flora and fauna, and the fact that Canada will become the breadbasket of North America? Patterns of immigration are also all about geography. Your advice to successors? Always do what we do best, not what others do. Adapted from National Geographic, march 2015 (printed edition). Os pronomes pessoais I e WE, destacados no texto, referem-se, respectivamente, a(o)
Answer

Question
Com base nas idéias expressas no texto abaixo, assinale a única alternativa correta. It’s never too late: adopting healthier lifestyle habits in middle age can cut cancer risk By Karen Collins, R.D. https://cdn.goconqr.com/uploads/media/image/22769074/desktop_efa6d6a1-a5cb-4f19-ab72-f3c5ab6476d8.jpg If you think “it’s too late now” or “I can’t be that perfect” to adopt healthy habits to lower your risk of cancer, a new study has just poked a hole in those excuses. The study concluded that following steps advocated by health researchers, such as those at the American Institute for Cancer Risk, even moderately well, beginning in middle age, can make a difference. Researchers looked at how the eating and lifestyle habits of women aged 55 to 69 were related to their health 12 years later. They evaluated habits based on how many of the AICR guidelines these women followed. Besides looking at tobacco use, researchers looked at whether the women: maintained a healthy weight; gained no more than 11 pounds after age 18; exercised daily; ate at least five servings of vegetables and fruits daily; got adequate complex carbohydrates; and limited alcohol, red meat, fat and salt. Out of more than 29,000 women, not a single one followed all of these recommendations. But about 10 percent of the women were nonsmokers who followed six to nine of the recommendations. After 12 years, those who followed only one or none of the recommendations were 35 percent more likely to develop cancer than those who followed six to nine of them. Statistical analysis estimates that if all the women in the study had followed six to nine recommendations, 22 percent of the cancers that occurred could have been avoided. If they had also avoided tobacco, 31 percent of the cancers might have been avoided. Combining the results of this study with findings from past research tells us several things about cancer prevention. We see that we can lower our risk even if we can’t follow all the recommendations perfectly. On the other hand, taking just a couple of easy steps is probably not enough. Scientists believe that eating and lifestyle habits work together to increase or decrease cancer risk, so it makes sense that putting just a couple pieces of the puzzle in place is not enough. Question 13

Question
(UEG GO/2003) I AM THE PEOPLE, THE MOB I am the people – the mob – the crowd – the mass. Do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me? I am the workingman, the inventor, the maker of the world’s food and clothes. I am the audience that witnesses history. The Napoleons come from me and the Lincolns. They1 die, and then I send forth more Napoleons and Lincolns. I am the seed ground. I am a prairie that will stand for much plowing. Terrible storms pass over I forget. The best of me is sucked out and wasted. I forget. Everything but Death comes to me and makes me work and give up what I have. And I forget. Sometimes I growl, shake myself and spatter a few red drops for history to remember. Then – I forget. When I, the People, learn to remember, when I, the People, use the lessons of yesterday and no longer forget who robbed me last year, who played me for a fool, – then there will be no speaker in all the world say the name: “The People”, with any fleck of a sneer in his voice or any far-off smile of derision. The mob – the crowd – the mass, will arrive then. SANDBURG, Carl. In: Carl Sandburg. BODE, Carl. Highlights of American Literature, 1971, p.35. Question 14

Question
(UNIMONTES MG/2005) INSTRUÇÃO: Leia o texto que se segue e responda às questões propostas. Nun assassinated defending Amazon Greenpeace: the State government of Para has failed to protect her Sun 13 February, 2005 BRAZIL/Anapu, Para State 74 year old American missionary Sister Dorothy Stang was assassinated on Saturday in the Amazon state of Para, Brazil. Sister Dorothy was travelling to a sustainable development project in Anapu with some olleagues when she was shot three times by two gunmen. This tragedy occurred 16 years after the murder of Chico Mendes, who was also a defender of rural communities. Mendes was also a colleague of the current Minister for the Environment Marina Silva. Marina Silva is in Anapu meeting with State authorities, following the news of Sister Dorothy’s death. “Like Chico Mendes, Sister Dorothy refused to be intimidated and she paid an enormous price”, said Paulo Adario, Greenpeace Amazon co-ordinator. “She selflessly worked for many years supporting the rights of rural workers, and defending the Amazon from reckless deforestation and we can’t let her death be in vain.” Originally from Dayton, Ohio, US, Sister Dorothy was a Brazilian citizen and has worked in the Amazon for the past 37 years, living in Anapu since 1972. For 56 years she has been a member in good standing in the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an international Catholic religious order of approximately two thousand women who work on five continents. She opposed land grabbers and illegal loggers who use intimidation, violence and guns to force small landowners off their land. She worked in an area that is remote and lawless and she has received many death threats. “She had been on a death list for years, yet the State government of Para has failed to protect her. She was not alone either, as there are many others fighting against the forest destruction and the rights of local communities, whose lives are in danger”, said Adario. “The violence and intimidation must stop. We cannot accept more martyrs in the Amazon.” Para is the Amazon state with the highest murder rate related to land disputes. According to the Pastoral Land Commission, a Catholic organisation campaigning for landless people and the poor, 1,237 rural workers died in Brazil from 1985 to 2001, and 40 percent of these occurred in Para. Para State is responsible for approximately one-third of the deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and plays a leading role in both environmental abuse and human rights violations. (www.greenpeace.org/international, 09/04/2005 – with adaptations) “She selflessly worked for many years supporting the rights of rural workers, and defending the Amazon from reckless deforestation and we can’t let her death be in vain.” O pronome destacado acima we, considerado no âmbito do texto, remete-nos às/aos
