Question 1

Question
In [blank_start]395[blank_end], emperor Teodosius, from Hispanic ascendence, divided the Roman Empire into two parts. Western stayed under the control of his son Honorio and Eastern for Arcadio. The [blank_start]Eastern Roman Empire[blank_end] was richer and was not affected by Germanic invasion as the Western Empire. Thanks to this fact Eastern Empire, whose capital city were [blank_start]Constantinople[blank_end] (an ancient Greek colony called [blank_start]Byzantium[blank_end] that was embellished by the emperor [blank_start]Constantine the Great[blank_end]). Since emperor [blank_start]Justinian[blank_end] came to power, we can talk about [blank_start]Byzantine Empire[blank_end] instead of Eastern Roman Empire. He ruled the Empire with his wife [blank_start]Teodora[blank_end] (both appear in two wall [blank_start]mosaic[blank_end] in the Italian church of S. Vital, in the city of [blank_start]Ravenna[blank_end]). He tried to [blank_start]rebuild[blank_end] the Roman Empire, so through his generals, as Belisario, he conquered [blank_start]North Africa[blank_end], almost whole [blank_start]Italian peninsula[blank_end] and the [blank_start]south of the Iberian peninsula[blank_end]. Two main characteristics of Justinian period was the great [blank_start]power[blank_end] of the emperor or [blank_start]basileus[blank_end] (he was the [blank_start]political[blank_end], [blank_start]religious[blank_end] and [blank_start]military[blank_end] head of the Empire) and one of the most important facts in Laws History, such as the compilation of all the Roman rules and laws known until the moment. Justinian period was the most [blank_start]brilliant[blank_end] and [blank_start]powerful[blank_end] ages of the Byzantine Empire. Since Justinian's death in 565, the territories began to [blank_start]decrease[blank_end] due to various causes. In Italy, [blank_start]Lombards[blank_end] (a Germanic tribe came from North Europe through Danubian river valley), conquered Byzantine territories. In Hispania, [blank_start]Visigoths[blank_end] leaded by their king Leovigildo expelled them from southern part of the Iberian peninsula. Finally, [blank_start]Muslim[blank_end] expansion caused Byzantines lost the Eastern and Southern parts of their territories. By [blank_start]XIIth[blank_end] century Byzantine Empire was only the Western part of the anatolian peninsula and the South of the Balcanic peninsula (what nowadays is Greece, Albania and the south of Bulgaria). By the [blank_start]XVth[blank_end] century, 50 years before Constantinople was conquered by the Turks, the only part truly controlled by the Byzantine power was [blank_start]the capital city[blank_end]. Finally, at [blank_start]1453[blank_end], the Turks leaded by the sultan Mehmet II, came into the "New Rome".
