Procedure for answering:

1. Find the Mr of the product that was required

2. Find the Mr's of all the products created and add them together to find the sum

3. Use the equation to calculate atom Economy

Example Calculation:

The following reaction was carried out to produce a sample of but-2-ene.

CH3CH2CH(OH)CH3 -------> CH3CH=CHCH3 + H20

Calculate the atom economy of the reaction.

1. 12 +1+12+3+12+1+12+3=56

Mr(But-2-ene) = 56

2. Mr(H2O) = 18

56+18=74

3. 56/74=0.757

0.757 x 100 = 75.7

% = 75.7
