Transmission Terminology

Frequency, Spectrum and Bandwidth

Analog and Digital Data Transmission

multi-point

direct link

point-to-point

simplex

half duplex

full duplex

Noise

more than two devices share the link

no intermediate devices

direct link

one direction • eg. television

either direction, but only one way at a time • eg. police radio

both directions at the same time • eg. telephone

additional signals inserted between transmitter and receiver

thermal

intermodulation

crosstalk

Frequency Domain Concepts

Spectrum & Bandwidth

analog signal

digital signal

periodic signal

aperiodic signal

Sine Wave

peak amplitude (A)

frequency (f)

phase ()

Frequency Domain Representations

Addition of Frequency Components (T=1/f)

spectrum

absolute bandwidth

effective bandwidth

 DC Component

range of frequencies contained in signal

width of spectrum

 often just bandwidth  narrow band of frequencies containing most energy

component of zero frequency
