Hallucination/ Illusion argument

Subjectively Indistinguishable

When two things seems exactly the same. You cannot tell them apart from experience alone.

Therefore in hallucinations, you cannot tell what is real or not.

However, some people know when they are hallucinating so they are not subjectively indistinguishable

Even though some people know when they are hallucinating, only one example is needed to prove

The common factor principle

Subjectivley indistinguishable experiences involve 2 of the exact same kind of object

Therefore If i couldnt possibly tell the difference between two things then they must be the same kind of object

The papier Mache rockIf we see a papier mâché rock that is subjectively indistinguishable from an actual rock, the Common Factor Principle would suggest that both our experiences must involve awareness of exactly the same kind of object. However, we know that they do not. In experiences of rocks we are aware of rocks; in experiences of papier mâché rocks we are aware of papier mâché. This is the case despite the fact that we may not be able to tell the difference between them. This shows that we can have subjectively indistinguishable experiences that involve different kind of things. Therefore if that is the case, then in hallucinations and illusions we could be aware of sense data and not in real life.

Smoothness

The whole thing has to be sense data, however this argument only suggests that certain things (illusions and hallucinations) have sense data and this does not make sense. Therefore it shows that our awareness of mind independent objects changes as we look at different things. This does not make sense. It does not seem that our awareness of things shifts from sense data to without it in our mind
