  1. 1Differences between a LAN and a WANA LAN is a network that covers a small geographical area and is usually used to connect computers together within a single building. A WAN connects several LANs, it covers a larger geographical area.
  2. 2Factors that can affect the performance of a network.Bandwidth (The networks capacity), Latency (The delay before a transmission), The number of users using the network.
  3. 3Similarities and differences of switches and routers. Both switches and routers and devices used a network to allow more devices to be connected to the network. Switches send data to a precise location, a router joins networks and manages the traffic between them.
  4. 4Wired and Wireless.Wired connections are more reliable than wireless connections as there is a physical connection between the device and the router or switch.
  5. 5Differences between a WAP and a Hotspot.Hotspots use a mobile device like a smartphone to create its own wireless network, using itself as a router. Wireless Access Points (WAP) allow wireless devices to connect to a wired network.
  6. 6WiFi Channels.WiFi has multiple channels or frequencies that can be used in a network. Each frequency range is separated into different channels, which can be used to send data wirelessly over a network.
  7. 7Client-Server Topology.Client-Server Topology.
  8. 8Peer-to-Peer Topology.Peer-to-Peer Topology.
  9. 9Comparison of Peer-to-Peer and Client-Server topologies. In a Peer-to-Peer network all nodes are connected to one another, meaning that they can directly transfer data between each other quickly. In a Client-Server network all data being transferred must first be sent to the server, data transfers will be slower as there is not a direct route between any of the nodes.
  10. 10Two advantages of peer-to-peer networks.Peer-to-Peer networks allow quicker data transfers between nodes in a network due to each node being connected to one another. Peer-to-peer networks do not require any other hardware other than the nodes themselves, making it cheaper.
  11. 11Advantages and disadvantages of star networks.- Requires more cable than others.
    - If the hub or switch fails the whole network cannot be used.
    + Data collisions cannot occur.
+ Reliable, if 1 node fails the network will still work.
+ Nodes can be added without disturbing the network.
  12. 12Features of a mesh network. In a mesh network, each node is connected to one another, allowing for quick data transfers.
  13. 13Protocol.A protocol is a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices.
  14. 14Differences between a MAC address and an IP address.A MAC address is the hardware address, it is given to a device and cannot be changed. An IP address is the computers address used for networks. IP addresses can be changed.
  15. 15Features of a data packet.Data packets contain, recipient IP address, sender IP address and the number the data packet is, used to order and organise the data after it has been sent.
  16. 16Missing data packets.Recieving devices, upon recieving the data packets, order them. Each data packet is given a number before it has been sent. If a number is missing, that data packet has been corrupted or has gone missing. This can then be re-sent to the recieving device.
  17. 17TCP.Transmission Control Protocol. A communication protocol used to interconnect network devices on the internet.
  18. 18IP.Internet Protocol. A protocol used for communication over networks. It is used for device identification and location addressing over networks.
  19. 19FTP.File Transer Protocol. A network protocol used for the transfer of data between a client and server.
  20. 20HTTP.Hypertext Transfer Protocol. An application protocol used for data communication of the World Wide Web.
  21. 21HTTPS.HTTP Secure. An extension of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Allows secure communication over a computer network.
  22. 22SMTP.Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. An Internet standard for electronic mail transmission.
  23. 23POP3.Post Office Protocol. An application-layer Internet standard protocol used by e-mail clients to retrieve e-mails from a server.
  24. 24IMAP.Internet Message Access Protocol. An internet standard protocol used by e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail messages from a mail server over a TCP/IP connection
  25. 25Layers of network protocol.Application Software, Middleware, Transport and Network Layer, Network Interface.
  26. 263 Reasons why protocols are layered. It makes it easier to visualise the interactions between the protocols, It provides a common language to describe network functions and it makes it easier to design networks.
  27. 27How DNS works. When a URL is inputted, the computer looks up the URL in a database, called the DNS. It links the word URL to the number IP of the webpage requested and uses the IP to connect to the webpage.
  28. 28Advantages of using the cloud.Using the cloud is cheaper than alternatives like using a server. Data stored on the cloud is protected by another company, usually more reliable. The cloud can be accessed from anywhere, using a variety of devices. The cloud offers nearly endless storage space.
  29. 29Disadvantages of using the cloud. The cloud can only be accessed when a device has connection to the internet. Buying storage space on the cloud costs money. Data stored on the cloud could be at risk of unauthorised access if not properly secured by the company.
  30. 30Virtual Networks.A virtual network is a network that uses remote computers or servers that can be connected to over the internet. Data can be stored over the internet without having the computer near.
  31. 31DDoS.Denial-of-Service Attack - Sending many requests to a computer or server in order to stop it functioning properly.
  32. 32Eavesdropping.Purposefully reading or 'listening in' to communications between computers on networks.
  33. 33Brute-Force.A trial-and-error method used to obtain a users password or login details.
  34. 34Dictionary.An attempt to gain unauthorised access to a computer using every combination or words / characters to guess login details.
  35. 35Identity (IP) Spoofing.Using a program to contruct IP packets that appear to originate from valid addresses to gain access to a network.
  36. 36Actions of malicious software.Edit data, steal data, sell data, prevent software from functioning, hold ransom, disrupt operation.
  37. 37How malware accesses devices.Spam e-mails with links that can download the program onto the computer, Infected removable drives or hard disk drives being connected to a computer, bundled with other software and downloading itself onto the computer.
  38. 38Social Engineering. The phychological manipulation of people into performing actions or giving away sensitive data. For example: Phishing, Identity Fraud.
  39. 39SQL Injections.A code injection technique which is used to steal data from databases, adding statements into an entry field and executed to give the attacker data from the database.
  40. 40Network Policies.A network policy might include: Acceptable use policies, confidential data policies, network security policies, password and physical security policies.
  41. 41Password Precautions. For a secure password, you should include: uppercase and lowecase characters, symbols and numbers and no full words.
  42. 42Uses of firewalls.Firewalls protect networks against unauthorised access, they prevent 'hackers' accessing data they shouldn't be able to.
