    • Reduces workload for teachers
    • Help to plan timetables
    • More efficient/up-to-date reporting
    • More efficient tracking and monitoring
    • Central access to data
    • Can access 24/7
    Disadvantages:
    • Software can be expensive to buy and maintain
    • Cost of giving every teacher an administrator or computer/ putting a computer in every classroom for staff can be high
    • Staff training is needed as the programme is complex
  5. 5List 3 ways a database could be used in school management (3)• Yr9/12 option choices

  6. 6What is a biometric method? (1 mark)A property of the human body such as fingerprints or patterns on the retina that can be used to identify person.
  7. 7State one advantage and one disadvantage of biometric security (2 marks)Advantages:
    • There is nothing, like a card, for a student to forget.
    • You have to be present to register so no-one else can register for a student, meaning it cannot be altered.
    • Performed in real time so the system knows exactly who has registered and when.
    Disadvantages:
    • Expensive
    • Privacy issues – people may object to fingerprinting systems.
    • Total reliance on the ICT systems.
  8. 8Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of forecasting the weather (4 marks)Advantages:
    • Farmers can know when to plant of harvest their crops.
    • People can choose when to take their holidays to take advantage of the weather.
    • Surfers know when large waves are expected.
    • People can evacuate if hurricanes or floods are expected.
    • Aircraft and shipping rely heavily on accurate weather forecasting.
    Disadvantages:
    • Weather is extremely difficult to forecast correctly.
    • It is expensive to monitor so many variables from so many sources.
    • Very expensive computers are used to perform the millions of calculations necessary.
    • The weather forecasters get blamed if they get the weather forecast wrong.
  9. 9Define data logging (1 mark)The process of using an ICT system to collect data from sensors at a certain time over a certain period of time.
  10. 10Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of data logging (4 marks)Advantages:
    • Readings are always taken at exactly the right time.
    • Don’t need anyone to take readings.
    • No human error.
    • System does not forget to take readings.
    • Readings can be taken faster.
    Disadvantages:
    • Equipment malfunction can cause wrong readings.
    • Expensive equipment.
  11. 11Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of control systems (4 marks)Advantages:
    • Continuously operates 24/7.
    • Cheaper - no need to pay wages.
    • Can work in dangerous places.
    • It's easy to change the way the device works by re-programming it.
    • Can be more accurate than humans.
    • The computer can react quickly to changes in conditions.
    Disadvantages:
    • Initial cost of equipment is high.
    • Equipment can go wrong.
    • Fewer people are needed so leads to unemployment.
  12. 12A school uses ICT to collect weather data. Name two different types of sensor used to collect weather data (2 marks)Heat/temperature sensor/thermostat sensor
    Air Pressure sensor
    Rain/rainfall sensor
    Wind (speed)/wind (direction) sensor
    Light sensor
    Humidity/moisture sensor
    Sunshine hours/irradiance sensor
    Electrochemical sensor
  13. 13Computers are used for weather forecasting. One method of displaying weather information in a graph. Give two other different ways of displaying weather information on a computer. (2 marks)Using icons/graphics/weather symbols
    Video/animations/simulations/games
    Text/messages about the weather
    Numbers/spreadsheets/tables/database
    Maps/satellite.
  14. 14Other than the variety of ways to display the data, give two advantages of computer-based weather forecasting systems. (2 marks)Collected at exactly correct time/collected accurately
Data can be collected from remote and dangerous places
    Data can be /recorded accurately
Data can be transmitted by radio/satellite communication
    Monitor 24/7 / Humans don't need to be there/Data collected/updated automatically
Can process large amounts of data.
  15. 15Describe how each of the sensors listed below could be used in school. Each example must be distinctly different. (4 marks)Temperature sensor - to switch boiler/heater in the heating system on or off at a particular temperature. As well as to measure a boiling point of a liquid in a science experiment.
Pressure sensor - measuring depth of a liquid in a science lesson.
Pressure pads can be placed under mats to activate a burglar alarm.
Movement sensor - Passive infr-red sensors used to turn lights on when someone approaches.
Light sensor - turns security light on when it gets dark, also to see how light levels affect the growth of plants.
  16. 16State three different data from sensors can be displayed. (3 marks)Graphs, text, numbers, animations/video, table/spreadsheets/database, lights.
  17. 17Write a set of instructions to make the robot travel the walkway shown in the plan below, pickup the rubbish and drop it in the bin. (3 marks)FWD 20
RIGHT 90 (Accept LEFT 270 & follow through)
    FWD 15
    RIGHT 90
    FWD 5

  18. 18A college has created an indoor rainforest. The following sensors are being used to control the conditions in the rainforest. If a sensor detects a value that is too high it sends a value 1 to the computer. The four bits are sent in the order shown above. For each of the following describe the conditions in the rainforest when the following bit patterns are received. (3 marks)- TEMPERATURE, LIGHT, HUMIDITY & MOISTURE the sensors are normal/all ok/all right
    o / perfect conditions/not too high
    - TEMPERATURE & LIGHT are high/too hot & HUMIDITY & MOISTURE are normal/
    o /ok/all right/perfect conditions/not too high
    - TEMPERATURE, LIGHT, HUMIDITY & MOISTURE are high/are too high.
  19. 19Describe how each of the sensors listed below could be used in the home and/or garden. Each example must be distinctly different. (4 marks) (i) Temperature sensor (ii) Light sensor 9iii) Movement sensor (iv) Pressure sensorExamples must be distinctly different scenarios.
To achieve the mark there must be a resulting action or output device.
    TEMPERATURE -
Light goes off on iron when at temperature.
Air conditioning will turn on when a certain temperature is reached.
    LIGHT -
Porch light comes on automatically when darkness falls.
    MOVEMENT -
Games controller makes on screen tennis player respond.
Internal lights switch on when someone enters the room.
PRESSURE - Balance board on a fitness game responds to changes in weight distribution.
Pressure sensor on the patio windows control an alarm.
    ANY REASONABLE ANSWER
NOT school or business related example.
