  1. 1Thomas Aquinas' Religious ExperienceThe year before Aquinas died, he had a religious experience so powerful that all of his prior knowledge was like 'straw before the wind'. He was so affected by it that he ceased completing Summa Theologiae.

    Conversion Experiences
    Crisis Apparitions
    Near-Death Experiences
    Numinous Experiences

  4. 4Conversion ExperiencesConversion to a religion from atheism or from one religion to another
  5. 5Crisis ApparitionsA form of vision of someone undergoing crisis, for example severe danger or death
  6. 6Near-Death ExperiencesEvents where you come within close contact of death, but survive
  7. 7Numinous ExperiencesExperiencing God as the 'wholly other'
  8. 8St Augustine's VisionsSt Augustine categorised Visions into 3 categories: Corporeal, Imaginative and Intellectual.
  9. 9Corporeal VisionsCorporeal visions are a form of Empirical religious experiences, or those which involve our five senses. One of the most common forms of religious experience is seeing God through nature, which is a corporeal vision.
  10. 10Example of a Corporeal VisionJoan of Arc told that from the age of 12 she experienced visions of angels and saints, accompanied by voices which told her to bring renewal to the French nations. Consequently, Joan of Arc led the French to victory against the English in the Hundred Years War.
  11. 11Imaginative VisionsIn Imaginative Visions the experiencer has no power to influence the events taking place, and it is not processed through the 5 senses. It is shown to the experiencer directly without the use of sight.
  12. 12Example of an Imaginative VisionThe Pharaoh's Dream, Genesis 41: In this account, the Egyptian Pharaoh receives two powerful dream visions which he cannot interpret. We know these are Imaginative as he did not see the visions, but experienced them directly with his mind.
  13. 13Intellectual VisionsIntellectual Visions have no image. They are typically described as 'seeing' things as they 'really are'. They are claimed to be indescribable through normal language and therefore cannot be explained.
  14. 14Example of an Intellectual VisionSpanish Mystic St Teresa of Avila claims that she had a vision in which she 'saw nothing with the eyes of the body' and 'saw nothing with the eyes of the soul' but 'had a most distinct feeling of His near presence'.
  15. 15Numinous ExperienceRudolf Otto put forward the idea that religious experiences are an apprehension of the wholly other.
  16. 16The idea of the HolyReligious experiences are encounters with the Holy, 'holy' being the keyword of all religion. Another word for holy is 'sacred'.
  17. 17The NuminousNuminous comes from the Latin word 'numen', meaning 'relating to the power of a Deity'. According to Otto, the numinous is common to all religious experience.
  18. 18Sui GenerisUnique, or of its own kind. Otto says this describes our feelings towards the numinous.
  19. 19Numinous FeelingsNuminous feelings are entirely non-rational, and cannot really be explained.
  20. 20Mysterium Tremendum et FascinansThe mysterious, tremendous and fascinating. The tremendous power can chill and numb, and inspires feelings of awe and majesty, alongside dread.
  21. 21Mystical ExperiencesWilliam James describes Mystical Experiences as the primary part of religion, and something which is entirely unique to each person yet cannot be explained.
  22. 22Religious Experience and Religion itselfReligious experience is primary and comes from a factually existing God. Religion, in the sense of organised religion, is secondary. Religious experience is not a result of belonging to a religion, Religious belief is the response to a religious experience.
  23. 23William James's view of GodGod is not the God of Judaeo-Christian teaching, and is likely finite not infinite. He is not omnipotent, and God can be a collection of beings rather than one. God interacts with ourselves in time, so is probably temporal, not knowing the future.
  24. 24Beliefs involved in the Religious lifeThe true end of humanity is union with that higher univers. Prayer or inner communion with God is efficacious, and produces real psychological or material effects in this world.
  25. 25The psychological benefits of religious lifeAn energetic zest for life, from which people can feel a kind of lyrical enchantment or inspiration, and an assurance of safety, peace and loving affection.
  26. 264 Qualities of Mystical ExperiencesIneffability, Noetic Quality, Transiency, Passivity
  27. 27IneffabilityThe experience cannot be described in words, and has to be directly experienced to be understood.
  28. 28Noetic QualityMystical experiences give rise to knowledge, so that those who experience them learn something as a result.
  29. 29TransiencyMystical states cannot be sustained for long. Except in rare cases, they last at the longest about half an hour.
  30. 30PassivityOnce the experience begins, it is entirely beyond the person's control. This is true even when the person has invited the experience.
  31. 31The wide range of Mystical ExperiencesMystical experiences are everywhere, and with varying levels of religious significance. For example, the feeling of familiarity when you have Deja vu, or the chills you get when listening to a phenomenal piece of music.
  32. 32The point of Mystical ExperiencesGod meets the individual on the basis of his personal concerns. According to James, reality is on a personal and private level, not a cosmic and general one. Every individual perceives God and receives God uniquely.
  33. 33Union with the DivineWalter Stace presents mystical experiences as a non-sensuous and non-intellectual union with the divine.
  34. 34Mysticism is not......anything to do with mystery or the occult, and nothing to do with what are called 'parapsychological phenomena', such as telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance and precognition.
  35. 35Mystical Experiences are not......Visions or Voices. Mystics are the sort of people who might see visions and hear voices, but according to mystics a genuine mystical experience is non-sensuous, having no form, shape, colour, smell or sound.
  36. 36The Two types of Mystical ExperiencesThe Extrovertive and the Introvertive
  37. 37Extrovertive Mystical ExperiencesThe extrovertive still sees the world of normal objects, such as trees and tables with physical sense, but these objects are transfigured so that the non-sensuous unity shines through them. Stace believes this is a sort of 'halfway house' to the introvertive, true mystical experience.
  38. 38Introvertive Mystical ExperiencesThe introvertive achieves the total suppression of sense experience in which awareness of the world is completely obliterated. 'Ordinary' conscience is replaced by an entirely new level of conscience - mystical consciousness.
