Validation & Verification

- 1What is Validation?Validation occurs before the data is entered, it does not check to see whether the data is accurate however, it helps to limit the data going into the system and improves data entry.
It usually gives error messages if the data entered is incorrect. - 2What are the different examples of Validation?Presence Check (Data must be entered into that field)
Length Check (Data must be within a set length e.g. 1-7 characters)
Range Check (Data must be between a certain amount, no less or greater)
Format Check (E.g. Short date, Currency)
Check Digit (Checks to see whether the last digit in the data is accurate/correct)
Type (Type of field)
Lookup Check (Drop down list) - 3Test 1... What type of validation technique can be used on a date field?A short date will be most appropriate because it reduces the amount of data displayed on screen and puts the data in the correct format. (DD/MM/YYYY).
- 4Test 2... What type of Validation technique(s) can be used on a First Name fieldOne validation technique that can be used is a presence check which ensures that the field must be entered by the user.
Another can be a length check which ensures that the data is between a set length e.g. 1-7 characters long.
Lastly, a range check can be used which ensures that the data is no greater or no less than the amount set. E.g. The data must be 1-6 characters no longer or no greater. - 5Test 3... What validation technique can be used on a online form to select the gender option?A lookup check would be the most appropriate because the data an be displayed and validated within a drop down list in which the user can select the option they require.
A presence check can also be used so that the user inputs their gender and does not skip this field. - 6What is Verification?Verification occurs after the data has been entered into the system. It checks to see if the data is 100% accurate after it has been entered into the system.
- 7What are the different examples of Verification?Double Entry (Used on passwords and other fields to make the user input the data twice as it makes the data more accurate).
Proof reading (Going over the data you have entered into the system again in order to ensure that it is accurate). - 8Test 1... What Verification technique can be used on a password field on a online booking form? The most suitable option would be double entry because it will allow the user to enter their password into the system twice in order to make sure that the data is accurate and secure.
- 9Test 2... When is it most appropriate to proof read data?Once the data has been entered into the system as the user can check over the data in order to make sure that it is 100% accurate and secure.
- 10Test 3... What Verification technique can be used on a student first name field?Double entry because it will prompt the user to re-enter their first name into the system in order to make the data more secure. However, this is not the best option as many people have the same first name.
