- 1What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Automation?Advantages:
- Increase speed of production
- Don't need to rest
- High accuracy/Improve product quality
- Usable in dangerous situations
Disadvantages:
- Takes human jobs
- Very expensive to purchase
- Can't carry out human judgement tasks - 2Explain Smart Technology in Manufacturing? It uses computerised machines and connects them with other machines and sensors to share data. It makes automated manufacturing extremely efficient. They can use this shared data to perform and organise tasks without any human input.
- 3Explain how tracking materials, tools, equipment and products, communication systems and specialised buildings are important in manufacturing?Tracking can be useful for monitoring stock levels and movement of products.
Communication Systems are useful for workers and machines to transfer information efficiently.
Specialised Buildings are useful for organising where certain pieces of products are made and giving them the most efficient environment. - 4Explain Flexible Manufacturing, Lean Manufacturing and Just-In-Time system?Flexible Manufacturing is a system that is easy to adapt to if the system that manufactures the design needs to be changed.
Lean Manufacturing is the aim to minimise the resources used and waste produced. it also aims to minimise costs and maximise efficiency.
The Just-In-Time system of stock control and materials being delivered and used as soon as they're delivered. - 5Explain Product Sustainability, Carbon Footprint and Social Footprint?Product Sustainability is the idea of not causing permanent damage to the environment and not using finite resources.
Carbon Footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere in the products life cycle.
Social Footprint is the impact that the design and manufacture of products can have on people e.g. Working conditions, Health impacts. - 6Explain the 6 R's?Repair - Fix instead of throwing away
Reuse - Extending a products life span
Recycle - Conserving energy by not obtaining new materials
Rethink - Redesign to make it better
Reduce - Making long-lasting, durable products
Refuse - Not buying the product due to inefficiency or poor sustainability - 7Explain Market pull and Market push?Market Pull is what consumers want and how designers design the product to the customers needs and wants - customer demand
Market Push is what manufacturers can provide and how their products can be adapted to their best function, aesthetics, price, efficiency etc - 8Explain Innovation and the types of Innovation?Innovation is when an entrepreneur or business come up with something new.
Crowdfunding is the use of backers who invest money to help a business in return for a reward.
Visual Marketing and Visual Retail is the idea of promoting and selling products on the Internet.
Co-operatives is when the members of the business also run and control decision making in the business, this can be used for Fairtrade which ensures everyone involved is given a fair amount. - 9Explain how Technology has had an impact on Employment, Culture and Society?Technology has reduced the need for workers in some job areas e.g. manual labour, while it has increased the need for others e.g. computer programmers.
Technology can have a negative impact on culture as it can isolate or offend certain cultures e.g. Animal products for Vegetarians or Vegans. It can also be useful and allow people around the world to keep up with the culture and trends e.g. Fashion on the Internet.
Technology can be affected by a particular group of society and how the product may need to fit their needs e.g. Disabled people may need adjustments to products to fit their specific disability. - 10Explain Finite (Non-Renewable) resources and their advantages and disadvantages?Finite resources involve the use of burning fossil fuels. They can be good because they are reliable/enough right now and running costs are fairly low so they are cost efficient, however they will eventually run out and have negative social and environmental impacts when extracted and used in manufacturing.
- 11Explain Non-Finite (Renewable) resources and their advantages and disadvantages?Non-Finite resources involve the use of wind, hydro, solar, tidal and biomass power. They are good because they have a smaller environment impact and energy provided is free, however the initial set-up costs are high, less reliable, noisy, not aesthetically pleasing and some have large environmental impact.
- 12Explain Nuclear Power and its advantages and disadvantages?Nuclear Power is the process of nuclear fission produces the heat to create the steam that drives the turbine. This is good because it is reliable, quite cheap and produces low levels of greenhouse gases, however it uses finite fuel sources, cost a lot to build, maintain and decommission, the waste is dangerous and carries the risk of a large catastrophe.
- 13Explain Energy storage systems and batteries?Energy storage systems are used to store any additional energy being created when the demand is low. Energy can also be stored in batteries as chemical energy. Alkaline batteries are often disposable, recyclable, durable, gradually decreasing power output and reduced environmental impact. Rechargeable batteries are more expensive but can be repeatedly used, a smaller environmental impact and a constant, consistent power output.
- 14Explain the Scales of Production? (1/2)One-Off Production makes bespoke products where every item is different to fit the specific customers needs. It usually requires a large, highly skilled workforce and making a product can take a long time.
Batch Production is where a specific quantity of a product is made, and can be repeated as many times as possible. It requires a flexible workforce so it can go from making a batch of one product to another at a good speed. - 15Explain the Scales of Production? (2/2)Mass Production is where thousands of identical products are made. It uses a lot of automation, expensive specialised equipment, CAD and CAM but recruitment is fairly easy as staff don't need to be highly skilled.
Continuous Production runs all the time because it would be expensive to restart the process. It is almost entirely automated and equipment is built to make huge amounts of a single product, which makes it expensive but it can be made quite efficient and the cost per item is cheap.
