Karten in diesem Stapel (16)
- 1How does light travel?Light travels in straight lines
- 2How can travelling light be represented?Rays (straight line, touching source with an arrow to show direction)
- 3What is the relationship between the speed of light and the speed of sound?Light travels faster than sound
- 4What is a luminous object? Give examples.A luminous object is an object that gives out light.
E.g. a light bulb, a burning candle, the Sun - 5What is a non-luminous object? Give examples.A non-luminous object is an object that does not give out light, although it can still reflect light from other sources.
E.g the Moon, the Earth, humans, a chair etc. - 6Incident rayThe incident ray is the light going towards the mirror
- 7Reflected rayThe reflected ray is the light coming away from the mirror
- 8NormalThe normal is drawn at 90° to the surface of the mirror
- 9The angle of incidenceThe angle of incidence is the angle between the normal and incident ray
- 10The angle of reflectionThe angle of reflection is the angle between the normal and reflected ray
- 11The law of reflectionThe law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection
- 12RefractionLight waves change speed when they pass across the boundary between two substances with different densities, such as air and glass. This causes them to change direction and this effect is called refraction.
- 13DispersionThe separation of white light into colours or of any radiation according to wavelength.
- 14Primary coloursRed, green and blue. Primary colours of light add together to make white light, or secondary colours
- 15Secondary coloursMagenta, cyan and yellow.
- 16Explain how coloured objects appear in white light and in different colours of lightWhen light hits a surface, some of it is absorbed and some of it is reflected. The light that is reflected is the colour of the object in that light. For example, a blue object absorbs all the colours of the spectrum except blue: it reflects blue light.
