- 1cervical spineas you palpate down from the occipital protuberance we first reach C2 (axis)
the most protruding spinous process is C7
we can tell the difference between C7 & T1 by the patient going into neck extension as C7 will move more
to find the transverse processes we just palpate laterally - 2thoracic spineone level inferior to C7 is T1
T7 is medial from the inferior angle of the scapula
to locate the transverse processes you palpate one vertebral level superior then laterally - 3movement at cervical spineflexion
extension
lateral flexion
rotation - 4movement of thoracic spinesmall amount of flexion, extension & lateral flexion
- 5levator scapulae musclea posterior muscle that is just anterior to the upper fibres of the trapezius
it elevates, medially rotates & retracts the scapula, extends & laterally flexes the neck - 6scalene musclesanterior, middle, posterior scalenes are located on the lateral aspect of the neck
they assist in flexion, lateral flexion, rotation of the neck - 7trapezius musclesupper, middle & lower fibres
the upper fibres contract to elevate the scapula
lower fibres depress the scapula - 8sternocleidomastoid musclesuperficial neck muscle in the anterior aspect of the neck
acting alone it rotates the head to the opposite side & slightly laterally flexes
when acting together is flexes & extends the neck - 9erector spinae groupthese muscles basically run more or less down the complete length of the spine either side
their main function is to straighten the back, maintaining posture for example - 10latissimus dorsi muscleit is a broad, flat muscle that occupies most of the lower posterior thorax
it works to extend, adduct & medially rotate the shoulder - 11rhomboid major & minorboth muscles are found in the upper back
they both work to retract & medially rotate the scapula - 12—
