- 1What is periodic motion?•A motion which repeats itself
- 2In terms of shm, what is frequency?•The number of oscillations produced in a second.
- 3In terms of shm, what is time period?•The time taken to produce one oscillation.
- 4What is the equilibrium postion•The position at which the object stays at rest.
- 5What is Displacement?•The perpendicular distance from the equilibrium position.
- 6What is significant of the displacement on either side of the equilibrium position? On one side it will be positive, on the other side negative.
- 7What is a restoring force?•A force that attempts to restore a system to its equilibrium position.
•It is directly proportional to the displacement. - 8What is significant of the restoring force?•It's only present when an object is undergoing shm.
- 9How can the restoring force be calculated?F = -kx
•The negative sign indicates that the displacement is in the opposite direction to that of the restoring force. - 10What should be noted about the Tension and weight during SHM?•They are constant and equal to each other.
- 11How do we define SHM?•For small oscillations,
•acceleration is directly proportional to the displacement.
•where displacement is in the opposite direction to that of acceleration.
•acceleration is always directed towards the equilibrium. - 12How can acceleration from SHM be calculated?a = -ω^2x
a (max) = --ω^2x(note)
The negative sign indicates that acceleration is in the opposite direction to that of the displacement (x)
A (max) gives the amplitude or maximum displacement. - 13What is a time tracer?Variation of:
•displacement
•velocity
and acceleration of an object with time. - 14How can we produce time tracers?•Giving a small displacement to the spring.
•The motion sensor detects the motion of the spring mass system.
•The data logger connected to the motion sensor produces time tracers. - 15What can be said about the graphs of velocity, displacement and acceleration against time?•All three are sinusoidal graphs.
•Therefore, they are curved graphs.
•The gradient of the displacement time graph gives the velocity.
•Thereby, the velocity time graph can be calculated. - 16How can the acceleration time graph be plotted?•Using the gradient of the velocity time graph.
•acceleration time graphs are a reflection of the displacement time graph across the x axis. (horizontal reflection) - 17How can equations for SHM be derived using circular motion?•The movement of a particle oscillating with SHM follows a similar pattern to that of circular motion.
- 18How can we say that objects under SHM undergo circular motion?•The two moving bodies have the same period.
•Therefore, when one body completes a revolution, the other body completes an oscillation. - 19What are the equations which are related to circular motion and SHM?refer tut. page 4.
