- 1The positions of elements in the periodic table are linked to what? The positions of elements in the periodic table are linked to their physical and chemical properties.
- 2GroupsA group is a vertical column. Each element in a group has atoms with the same number of outer-shell electrons and similar properties.
- 3Atomic NumberReading from left to right, the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Each successive element has atoms with one extra proton.
- 4Trend across a Period - Period 2Across period 2, the 2s sub-shells fill with two electrons, followed by the 2p sub-shell which fills with 6 electrons
- 5Trend across a Period - Period 3Across period 3, the 3s sub-shells fill with two electrons, followed by the 3p sub-shell which fills with 6 electrons
- 6Trend across a Period - Period 4Although the 3d sub-shell is involved, the highest number shell is n=4. From the n=4 shell, only 4s and 4p shells are occupied.
- 7Trend down a Group- Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
- Elements in each groups also have atoms with the same number of electrons in each sub-shell
- This gives elements in the same group their similar characteristics/chemistry. - 8PeriodsElements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods, the number of the period gives the number of the highest energy electron shell in an elements atoms.
- 9PeriodicityAcross each period there is a repeating trend in properties of the elements called periodicity.
- 10What are the most obvious periodicity properties is the trend from metals to non-metals- Electron Configuration
