- 1What was our Aim?To investigate the changing channel characteristics, such as bedload size and shap, of River Lossie, Moray, with distance from its source.
- 2What was our Hypothesis?Load size will decrease downstream, whereas particle smoothness will increase downstream.
- 3What theory is the hypothesis based off of?Bradshaw Model, showing the key changes which may be expected as a river travels downstream in a diagrammatic way.
- 4Where was the location of our study?River lossie, rises as a small mountain stream running past the villages of Dallas, Kellas, through Elgin with its mouth at Lossiemouth. Source is at 522m and flows 30km in a north-easterly direction into the moray firth. R
- 5Why did we study this river? The river is small enough for us to be able to study it safely, but long enough to show the changes we are looking for. There are access points well placed along the length of the River Lossie.
- 6What were the risks?Fallling Over- Walk slowly and carefully
Water Hazard- avoid slippery rocks
Exposure to Cold- Do not get wet
Equipment- Carry ranging pole vertically
Road- Take care crossing roads - 7What sampling technique did we use?We used systematic sampling, as we measured the wet width by measuring across and dividing it into tenths to get where we will measure the depth. We can also use interrupted systematic sampling to get our sites as some points may be hard to reach.
- 8What equipment did we use?Wet Width- tape measure
Gradient- Clinometer
Depth- meter rule
Bedload shape/roundness- powers chart
Bedload size- callipers - 9What method of data representation did we use?Scattergraph with a line of best fit, easily shows the relationship between the distance downstream and velocity.
METHOD SHOULD BE WRITTEN AS A RECIPE - 10Advantages of a scattergraph?-Lots of points can be shown on one graph
-Patterns can be identified quickly and easily
-Anomalies can be spotted with an explanation
-Line of best fit shows strength
-If there is a relationship the data can be analysed using Spearmans Rank - 11Disadvantages of a ScattergraphMistakes can be made when plotting large amounts of data
Scattergraphs can only represent 2 variables
Best fit line may suggest relationship which is not really there
No explanation for trends found - 12What is Spearmans RankVery commonly used technique for measuring correlation. Test will indicate the strength of the relationship as a numerical value which is OBJECTIVE. Answer will lie between +1 and -1.
- 13What was the Null Hypothesis? There is NO significant relationship between the size of bedload and the distance from source.
- 14What were our results from Spearmans?Rs value of 0.664
Null hypothesis can be REJECTED and there is a significant correlation between the size of bedload and the distance from source.
Relationship is POSITIVE, therefore as the distance from source increases, the size of bedload also increases. - 15What was the reason for us to be able disagree with the Bradshaw Model? The bradshaw model accounts for a full length of a river- following a theoretical river.
- 16What were the limitations of our methods?Pacing is not very accurate
Three groups working at same time
Limited to how deep we could go
