- 1Act 1 Scene 1theme of conflict is established. Shakespeare juxtaposes Roderigo's failure to marry Desdemona with Iago's failure to gain a promotion, making it clear domestic and professional worlds will collide. Roderigo is under the control of Iago.
- 2Act 1 Scene 2Two images in this scene he is a soldier and good at leading an army,"Keep up your brught swords for the dew will rust them". but now he is married "free condition/ Put into circumscription and confine" it is unclear how well he will juggle these two identities.
Othello is admirable as he states, "I must be found" and he says that it is not time to fight. He is different to what Iago describe this emphasizes his position of high social ranking. This scene is the first time we see Cassio he comes across trustworthy and reliable. The most valuable part of the scene is that he doesn't understand a crude joke of Iago's shows they are different, distancing him from the villain. - 3Act 1 Scene 3Othello is put on trial in this scene. Shakespeare has structured the scene so the discussions move between love and war showing that Othello will be torn in different directions. this is questioned as Othello need to be prompt to woo Desdemona. As the two talk about the sincerity of their love it might be argued that they fell in love with the idea of eachother,"loved me for the danger i have passed and I loved that she did pity them.
- 4Act 2 Scene 1The principal characters are now isolated in the "warlike isle" of Cyprus. The storm in this scene forshadows the passions that will be unleashed fro Iago and Othello. The storm is plot device used to get rid of the Turkish fleet as they are no longer the concern it has been replaced by the internal threat of Iago. Iago arrives in Cyprus a week earlier as the storm has hekped his progress shows he thrives in conflict and he closes the scene.
- 5Act 2 Scene 2War and love are juxtaposed in this scene again. War is mentioned before love a reversal of what happened in the previous scene where Othello greeted Desdemona before Montano. Shows that Cyprus is a dangerous place. The public festival is supposed to celebrate the defeat of the Turkish troops but it has been combined with Othello wedding feast. Shows his love is under threat as it is linked to war.
- 6Act 2 Scene 3Cassio and Roderigo ruin their reputations in this scene through the fight but Iago strengthens his. The consummation of the marriage is interrupted so it is clear that the marriage is not stable. This scene is the turning point for Othello. Iago directs this scene from the start. Roderigo plays a sinister role in this scene but he is still managed by Iago. He is structurally important as he was Iago's first victim.
- 7Act 3 Scene 1 & 2Othello's dislike of music may suggest his downfall as the like of music was seen to be signs of a civilised and cultural mind.
Cassio talks to Desdemona. it is ironic that Iago talks badly about Othello to Cassio," I'll devise a mean to draw the Moor/ Out of the way" shows he can manipulate his behavior. - 8Act 3 Scene 3This is a long scene but it moves quickly it creates a sense of Claustrophobia. This is where Othello gives into Iago's lies. Iago's proofs are varied the hankercheif, and Cassio was the go between when Othello and Desdemona were courting so Cassio would of got to know Desdemona. The scene closes with Iago and Othello kneeling and Iago states that " I am bound to thee for ever" this shows he is breaking his vows to Desdemona her death is inevitable at this point. At the end of this scene he is seen as more of a villian.
- 9Act 3 Scene 4Desdemona is not only the victim of Othello and Iago but the clown also. But she is also abused by Emilia and Cassio here as Emilia knows what has happened to the Handkercheif but says nothing and Cassio selfishly asks for more help. Her vulnerability is seen by Emilias food metaphor. The handkerchief now is important and reflects different things for the characters.
Othello: Desdemona's honour
Desdemona: used to be a love potion but now it is linked to discord.
Emilia: test of loyalty
Iago: symbol of evil power
Cassio: treats the Handkercheif as carelessly as he treats women. - 10Act IV Scene 1Othello's language becomes more violent as he states that he will, "chop her into messes" and he also hits Desdemona in this scene. Iago chooses how Othelllo should kill Desdemona - strangulation.
Othello's pathos is seen in this scene at the pain that he has to kill the "sweet woman". - 11Act IV Scene 2Desdemona character has great pathos
Desdemona is pout on trial here and he asks Emilia in what she thinks.
