- 1Welcome to our presentation on site specific. We began by researching the definition of site specific. Site-specific theatre is any type of theatrical production designed to be performed at a unique, specially adapted location other than a standard theatre. We first looked at The Grand Step Project. This project is a
15-minute dance performance by 50 dancers. it is Inspired by the dynamic tension between the beauty and grandeur of prominent grand staircases—and the casual use a diverse public makes of them on a daily basis—The Grand Step Project reflects the spirit of the contemporary urban environment. - 2It was performed on six staircases throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx for an estimated audience of 16,000 people. It took over eight days and was repeated three times a day at the following sites:The World Financial Center Winter Garden, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian at the U.S. Customs House, The New York Public Library, The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Manhattan; and the Bronx County Building and Brooklyn Borough Hall.
- 3We are performing our interpretation site specific work on the steps. We used The Grand Steps as inspiration for movement choreography.Throughout our performance we hope you see elements of The Grand Step Project, such as everyday movements like walking.
- 4We then decided to use the trees as our focus for site specific. This is because after focusing on the Grand Step Project we wanted to use a naturalistic creation rather than a man made invention. We used Connecticut College's performance as inspiration. We believe that this is a good company to use as their piece is unique and creative. We wanted to use it as inspiration to choreograph our own performance with trees as we think this is an abstract piece.
- 5After researching the college we found out that since 1987 it has gained international interest for work that changes the familiar into the mysterious, the subversive, and the intimate. And under the artistic direction of Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig it has created and presented "appealingly subversive, engaging, wry, and deeply affecting work” (The Washington Post), and they have toured throughout the US, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and New Zealand.
- 6As we found many different types of site specific performances we wanted to create two of our own performances which we believe is suitable for this category.Firstly we looked at videos on youtube of performances which use sand. There was not a single company however, there were many dances which showed a variety of different uses of sand. We used these videos as inspiration to create our motif.
- 7We decided to take a different approach to site specific and use a man made prop instead of the focus being purely on the landscape. Therefore, we will chalk as our focus as we believe this is a unique and different way of showing site specific as we are using the landscape as it is but also using a man made prop to enhance the stimulus.
