Network Resources
• Describe networks by their scope: local area network (LAN), metropolitan area network (MAN) and wide area network (WAN);
- LAN is a network in which the computer systems are all situated relatively close to each other over a small geographical area, such as a school. Since the distances involved are small, direct physical connections are possible. The network connections are normally wire cables, wireless links or fibre optic cable. A Local Area Network normally serves a single organisation.
- WAN is a network in which the computers are geographically remote. Wide area networks make use of a range of connection methods typically using public telephone links, undersea cables and communication satellites. Often a wide area network links the local area networks in a geographically spread organisation.
- MAN is a network covering a highly populated area. The network serves the inhabitants of a built-up area, rather than an individual organisation, using fibre optic cable and wireless to provide a powerful service. The close proximity of users makes it cost-effective. A MAN is larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN.
