      • Elie Wiesel’s disturbing memoir ‘Night’ gives the horrific, personal account of a young Jewish boy at the hands of the Nazis in the Holocaust. As a survivor of the horrific concentration camps, Elie changes enormously from a devout, studious 13 year old to a young man who has witnessed atrocities that haunt him for the rest of his life. Firstly, he abandons his devout faith in Judaism and belief in the existence of an omnipotent God.  Secondly, he loses his boyish innocence and becomes a resourceful, determined young man who focuses on survival. Furthermore, one characteristic that grows even stronger is his loyalty to his father

      • Ultimately, Elie is very different from the young, naive boy from Sighet we meet in the beginning. The horrors he experiences as a victim of the Holocaust do consume his innocence, leaving him scarred for life. He abandons his religion when he witnesses and suffers the inhumanity of the Nazis.  However, he becomes stronger and tougher, relying on himself more. Moreover, it is his loyalty to his father that keeps Elie going, and somehow he survives. Although his story is heartbreaking, it leaves us with the poignant message, never to allow history to repeat those dark days.
